Living with a Paradox – an anthropological study of nature, sustainability and cruise ship tourism on Svalbard

Cruise ship holidays are getting more and more popular with the numbers of passengers increasing every year. This is happening even though cruise ships for long have been associated with a high amount of pollution. With this project I want to look at how nature, sustainability and cruise ship tourism are experienced as a part of the guides’ local livelihoods on Svalbard. In particular, I find interesting the paradox that people who care about nature and the place they live, participate in an industry that pollutes and potentially threatens its existence.
