The Political Geography of Arctic Research

My project looks at the relationship between twenty-first-century geopolitics and Arctic research, and the potential impact of geopolitical tensions on regional research collaboration. It takes a political-geographical approach, examining the power-relations embedded in questions of where and by who scientific knowledge about the Arctic is produced. I plan to explore these questions ethnographically through fieldwork at sites such as the Ny-Ålesund Research Station on Svalbard, which serves as a microcosm of the international Arctic science community.

Planned fieldwork periods on Svalbard: Summer 2022, Summer 2023
