The project is part of a PhD-work at the Institute of Geography at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. It will also look at the economic base of the development of Company Towns and put the question, what will happen with Company Towns after the “end of coal”. Will there be a future with new “industries” like tourism or research? The project will deal with different types of Company Towns, but the the focus will be on Longyearbyen as a case study.
